Administrator & Middle School Mathematics

I have been teaching at DCS since 2004. I have been blessed to be able to teach subjects that are interesting to myself. I love the challenges of teaching mathematics to students in the fifth-eighth grade range. A common question that I hear from students is "When will I ever use this?" Sometimes I have a concrete answer to that question but not always. I have learned that God has given us the ability to understand difficult concepts. Not every adult uses square roots every day in their life, but the Lord has given us the ability to comprehend square roots, so we owe it to Him to learn these concepts. At DCS the math series can be challenging, but it prepares our children for high school and it gets the kids thinking deeper.  Recently I have become the 7th and 8th grade homeroom teacher, which has added new areas of study. Each subject area is fascinating to me and allows me to see the different strengths of our Middle School students. My favorite part of teaching at DCS is the interaction with the students. There is so much growth seen in the students from entering into fifth grade to eighth grade graduation. The most rewarding growth I get to witness is the love and commitment to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I grew up in rural Wisconsin then moved to the northern suburbs of Chicago for grad school at Trinity International University / Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. I currently live with my husband, Andy, a cat named Hesed, a dog named Divine, and a dog named Cuddles. In my free time I enjoy training dogs as a CPDT-KA certified trainer, gardening, and trying new recipes. It is such a joy to get to know the wonderful students, parents, and staff at Delavan Christian School.

Preschool (3K) Teacher

My husband, Rick, and I have ten children. We have four biological boys, twin boys adopted from Ethiopia, a son adopted from China, and three daughters adopted from China. Seven of our ten children attended pre-school at DCS, so I am very familiar with the program and am thrilled to be working alongside and with the wonderful DCS staff, students, and families! I received my Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and my Master Degree in Education with an emphasis in Professional Development from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. I taught Kindergarten for five years at Central-Denison Elementary School in Lake Geneva before becoming a stay-at-home mom with my children. I am passionate about adoption and helping waiting children find families. In 2013, I became an official part-time waiting child advocate with Madison Adoption Associates.

Mrs. Sarah O'Niel
Preschool (4K) Teacher

Delavan Christian would like to welcome Mrs. Sarah O'Niel as our new 2020-2021 Prekindergarten (PK4) Teacher! Mrs. O'Niel is a DCS alumni! Her mother graduated DCS before her and her children are considered 3rd generation DCS! She has been married to her husband, Chris, for 22 years and together they have five children: Andrew (College freshman), Elizabeth (Junior at DDHS), Aaron (8th grade at DCS), Ian (8th grade at DCS), and Anna (3rd grade at DCS). Mrs. O'Niel graduated from Trinity Christian College with a BA in elementary education and taught for 4 years before starting a family and becoming a stay-at-home mom. During her time as a "stay-at-home" mom, Mrs. O'Niel cleaned houses, tutored students, babysat, did alterations, and substitute taught. She loves to read, craft, be outside (hiking, gardening, biking) and coffee - can't forget the coffee! She is also easily persuaded by all things sweet and is super excited to be back in her own classroom. Welcome, Mrs. O'Niel!

Mrs. Maria DeJong
Mrs. Maria DeJong
Kindergarten Teacher

I attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, and earned my teaching degree in 1993. I moved, with my husband Tim, to the Delavan area and taught 3rd and 4th grade here at Delavan Christian School for 3 years. When I became pregnant with my first child, I chose to be a stay-at-home Mom. Our youngest daughter will be a Junior at DDHS this year, our middle daughter is currently a Senior in college, and our oldest daughter is working as an RN in Iowa. A few years ago, I decided to get back into the school setting and worked as a teacher aide and a substitute teacher. When the Kindergarten position came open at DCS, I eagerly applied. I am excited to be back in the role of teacher here at DCS and am really excited about starting my 10th year of teaching Kindergarten! In my free time, I enjoy cooking and baking, reading, and just being with family.

I enjoy teaching, reading and spendng time with family and friends.

Third and Fourth Grade Teacher

I have an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and a Master's Degree in Education from UW-Whitewater. In my free time, you'll find me running, hiking, baking, reading, kayaking, and traveling. Being outdoors enjoying God's beautiful creation is something I especially enjoy! I have had the opportunity to travel many countries on mission trips. Instilling an awareness of global issues in my students is something I consider to be a priority. My husband and I have three grown children, and live on a hobby farm in rural Delavan. It is a gift to be able to integrate my Christian faith with my teaching. It is a true blessing to be entrusted with your children, and I covet your prayers as we continue learning!

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and later attended Stephen F. Austin State University to attain my teaching certification. I have classroom experience in 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades in both Texas and Wisconsin. I have lived in Elkhorn since 1998 with my husband, Alex and our 3 children, Connor (12th), Madeline (11th), and Graham (7th). This past summer I went to New York City! I attended Columbia University, and took a one-week intensive reading class. It was so fabulous, I am going to try and go again next year. It was powerful to be surrounded by colleagues who love children and reading as much as I do. In my free time, I like to bake, scrapbook, make cards, vacation, and go on adventures with my kids.

Mrs. Elaine Vegter
Mrs. Elaine Vegter
Art Teacher

DCS students work on a variety of art projects. 5th-8th grades are also taught drawing skills. I love to see what they are capable of and how they improve over time with their God-given talents and hard work. They are encouraged to be creative, do their personal best and have fun. They also learn to appreciate art and the beauty of God's creation. I'm married, have 3 children & 2 grandchildren. I spent time at Dordt taking art classes. More recently, watercolor & pottery classes (locally). I have also worked as a nurse's aide for 5 1/2 years, babysat for 13 years to stay home with my children, and continue to work at Aurora as a receptionist. I enjoy hiking, swimming, art, crosswords, family time, and visiting my daughter & grandchildren in Canada. I have also had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Brazil with Compassion International. Time spent with the child my husband and I sponsor was priceless!

Hot Lunch Coordinator

I absolutely love all things food! Cooking, creating recipes, food vlogs, cooking shows, cookbooks, challenges, etc.... If it has to do with food, I'm in! This position is perfect for a foodie like me! Together, my husband, Randy, and I have four children: Ethan (22) and Riley (20); and Jack (13), who will be an 8th grader this year at DCS, and Abby (12) who will be in the 6th grade. I have the longest commute of all of our DCS staff! We have been commuting to Delavan from Marengo, IL for the last 10 years! Some people think we're a little nutty for driving to a whole other state for school... but we wouldn't have it any other way! Our DCS family is that important and precious to us!
